Lager beer requires fermentation and aging at low temperatures (35 to 50 degrees F) to provide optimal conditions for the yeast to ferment the beer and produce the clean crisp taste you would expect from a lager.  If temperature is not carefully controlled, the result will be off-flavors and qualities due to undesirable and unwanted compounds produced by the yeast during fermentation.
